One of the many impacts of our multi-year Afghanistan contribution was to sensitize both politicians and senior bureaucrats to the risks associated with unknown outcomes.11 A combination of events, all predicated on the service of the women and men on the ground in Afghanistan, resulted in a public engagement on defence issues that arguably no Canadian government has faced since the Second World W.
