Domestically, Modi’s popularity represents the consolidation of Hindu nationalism as the new dominant ideology of India—a completely different policy from the India of the past and the vision of Nehru. [...] Changes in the “power ministries” (such as defense and the security services) raise the question whether the new leaders would be more aggressive or more concerned about the costs of the war. [...] The optimistic view in this year of elections is that free and fair elections will prevail, strengthening global democracy; the pessimistic view points to the rise of populism and the disparagement of facts and truth in an age of disinformation.
