1 Jan 1996

In Studies in Contemporary Jewry 12, 202-218. This study examines three 1905 events: the funeral of Nahum Meyer Shaikevich (Shomer); the 250th anniversary of Jewish settlement in America; and protest demonstrations mourning the victims of the October pogroms in tsarist Russia. These three episodes offer a paradigm of the public culture of American Jews, culture that exists till today although the form and idiom have changed.
