The devaluation of the Libyan Dinar on 3 January 2021 in combination with the resumption of oil production and the rise of global oil prices, incentivised the government to spend generously. [...] The sparsely populated region has the bulk of Libya’s most valuable resources, namely oil and fossil water, and many resent the extraction of these resources for the benefit of the north.
