Government, Voluntarism, Jewishness, and Accountability: An Essay on Principle and Principal

21 Apr 2008

This article explores the implications that arise when Jewish communal service agencies accept government funding. The author argues that many financial donors often stipulate specific requirements on how money can be spent. Furthermore, these requirements are commonly out of line with Jewish communal agency missions. The article suggests that accepting government funds has the possibility to diluting Jewish conventions, particularly if the funding requires that it be used to also advance the non-Jewish community.
