Older people and climate change — Encyclopedia of Gerontology and Population Aging

This encyclopedia offers reference information and in-depth entries in all areas of gerontology and population ageing, including research on older people and climate change. In total, the enormous collection contains over 1000 entries and draws on research from all over the world.

Gary Haq, a Senior Research Associate at SEI York, contributed six entries to this reference work. These focused on climate change and older people:

Gray Consumption

Explored how the use of goods and services by older people contributes to greenhouse gas emissions and climate change.

Heatwaves and Older People

Older people are disproportionately affected by heatwaves; this entry explored adaptation options.

Flooding and Older People

Explored how flooding can have a greater impact on the health and well-being of older adults as compared with other demographics.

Tropical Cyclones and Older People

Cyclones and severe storms can place great physical and social demands on older people; this entry outlined how older and vulnerable adults have more limited capacity to respond to these impacts.

Climate Gerontology (co-authored with Gloria Gutman)

Gave an overview of how this interdisciplinary field has emerged in response to convergent factors: an ageing population, more extreme weather events, and increased understanding of how climate change impacts older adults.

Climate Resilience and Older People (co-authored with Gloria Gutman)

Explored the resilience capacities needed to support and protect an ageing population from climate-related threats.
