While we need to be legitimately concerned about the social and educational effects of labeling, the well-meaning concern of liberal discourse on this question produces the guise of color and class blindness, as in “I don’t see colour; I see children.” This unwillingness to acknowledge difference is an expression of privilege related to the conflation of equality (treating people the same) and equ [...] For example, instead of learning about the abstract and depoliticized science of water, one school community in our project located a study of water in the 21st century in the fact that water in the school and community was not potable.
