1 KEY DEVELOPMENTS Humanitarian Needs Increase Countrywide as Syrian Crisis Enters Fourteenth Year An estimated 16.7 million people are in need of assistance in Syria in 2024, representing more than 70 percent of the country’s total population as of 2023 and the highest figure since the beginning of the conflict in March 2011, according to the 2024 UN Humanitarian Needs Overview (HNO) for Syria, r. [...] Since the Syrian conflict began, the USG estimates that the complex emergency has resulted in the deaths of more than 500,000 people and the displacement—both internally and across international borders—of more than one-half the population, many of whom have been displaced more than once, as of March 2024. [...] GOVERNMENT RESPONSE FOOD SECURITY AND NUTRITION USAID/BHA supports the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the UN World Food Program (WFP), and 15 NGOs providing emergency food and 17 nutrition assistance within Syria and to Syrian refugees in neighboring Number of USAID/BHA countries. [...] On January 11, the Permanent Mission of Syria to the UN announced the six-month extension of the consent-based mechanism for humanitarian assistance to the Bab al-Hawa BCP until July 13. [...] The earthquake and subsequent aftershocks had resulted in at least 6,000 deaths and injury to more than 11,200 people in Syria as of March 24, as well as damage to or the destruction of at least 34,000 buildings.
