The Value of Environmental Surveillance for Pandemic Response

6 Jun 2024

Environmental sampling surveillance (ESS) technologies provide valuable information for pandemic response. Using the COVID-19 pandemic as a base-case scenario, this paper presents a model to quantify the value provided by ESS systems in a new pandemic. An ESS could reduce first-year deaths from 149 to 132 per 100,000 in a new pandemic, yielding $1,620 net benefit per person.
