[...] The NA managed livestock movements and ensured the separation of grazing and farming areas, issuing orders regarding the timing, direction and location of livestock migration, when water points would be available, and the timing for the arrival of pastoralists in farming areas (El Hassan and Birch, 2008). [...] (2003) also highlight the importance of the ajaweed’s knowledge of the ecology of an area and the history of similar conflicts or even the history of that particular conflict. [...] Finally, in order to manage the uncertainty and variability of the climate, the migration of people and livestock, and the management of resources in sending and receiving communities, and along livestock routes, information and a process of learning are essential. [...] Should the Sudanese government see the value in promoting the NA and judiyya for resource and conflict management, it is realistically the only actor that is able to truly strengthen and restore fully the NA and judiyya.
