This paper contextualizes CCIs within their historical and economic frameworks, and addresses key debates in the field, such as the tension between the economic commodification of culture and the pursuit of authenticity. [...] The concept of CCIs emerged in the late twentieth century as a response to evolving economic, technological, and cultural dynamics, particularly in the context of neoliberal policies and the growth of information and communication technologies (ICT). [...] Behind the Scenes: The rise of Nollywood and Afrobeat The evolution of the Nigerian film industry reflects a response to colonial legacies and the challenges of post-independence economic and cultural policymaking. [...] It is important to link the evolution of the institutions and initiatives to the history of African cinema and music, and also to international frameworks and agendas, such as the UNESCO 2005 Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions, and Sustainable Development Goal11.45. [...] Other layers of these dynamics include debates on intangible heritage and orality, gender dynamics and representation, the influence of festivals and forums, the role of the diaspora (Tsika, 2014; Dekie et al, 2015), the themes of the movies, the constraints of censorship, the linguistic diversity, ethnic divisions and how they affect cultural production and consumption (Alabi, 2013).
