Tajikistan - Agrifood Security Policies Advice and Analytics : In-Depth Assessment of Climate-Smart Livestock in Tajikistan (English)

The overall climate-smart agriculture (CSA) analysis identifies opportunities for the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan to transform agriculture to increase productivity and enhance climate mitigation and adaptation. This in-depth assessment of climate-smart livestock is based on extensive research and consultations with a broad range of stakeholders. The livestock sector in Tajikistan contributes significantly to socio-economic development, and its share in agricultural gross domestic product (GDP) has been increasing since 2010. A climate-smart transformation of the livestock sector is imperative to feed future generations with animal-source foods in Tajikistan, as well as to achieve climate adaptation and deliver on Tajikistan's international environmental commitments. A climate smart transformation of the livestock sector in Tajikistan should aim to: (a) decrease the pressure on and rehabilitate rangelands, (b) enhance the availability of high-quality feed resources, and (c) increase the overall production efficiency of the existing herd. This report focuses on the two key value chains of dairy (dual-purpose) cattle production and broiler meat production. To achieve a climate-smart livestock sector, Tajikistan needs policies and investments designed to: (1) make the livestock industry more competitive, (2) help it adapt to climate change, and (3) minimize its environmental impacts.
