PAN-AFRICAN NETWORK CONFERENCE ON FIGHTING IFFs IN AFRICA “Africa’s Tax Agenda in Combatting Illicit Financial

In May 2022, the African Ministers of Finance, Planning, and Economic Development adopted a resolution calling on the UN to start negotiations towards an international convention on tax matters under the auspices of the UN. [...] It will explore the nexus between emerging tax policies and the challenges of Illicit Financial Flows (IFFs) within the context of intra-African trade dynamics, while also analyzing the implication of the Africa Continental Free Trade Area Agreement (AfCFTA). [...] Therefore, the exchanges and discussions organized around this panel discussion should allow, on the one hand, a regional perspective of the challenges that hinder the prevention of IFFs and, on the other hand, for countries to share their experiences on the appropriate mechanisms to curb these challenges. [...] CSOs often struggle with organizational challenges, poor access to information, the complexity of the topic and increasingly shrinking spaces through overregulation - the so-called unintended consequences of the implementation of international standards.
