The development objective of the Greater Accra Metropolitan Area (GAMA) Sanitation and Water Project for Ghana is to increase access to improved sanitation and improved water supply in the GAMA and Greater Kumasi Metropolitan Area (GKMA) with emphasis on low income communities and to strengthen management of environmental sanitation in the GAMA and the GKMA. Some of the negative impacts and mitigation measures include: (1) provide personal protective equipment (PPE) for field staff; (2) avoiding construction activities during stormy weather conditions to avoid soil and land degradation; (3) do not undertake demolition activities during evenings and resident’s rest hours to avoid noise pollution; (4) water should be sprayed on dusty haulage streets and excavated areas around construction sites to avoid dust; (5) provide impervious surfaces with sumps at vehicle maintenance garages to collect spill oil; (6) ensure backfilling of trenches and open pits created by the construction works; (7) regular safety and induction trainings for the construction workers will ensure occupational health and safety among the workers; (8) provide temporary alternative routes and access for pedestrians and motorists displaced from their routes and paths in the community for traffic management; and (9) regularly fumigate sanitation facilities in schools, households, and treatment facilities to maintain hygiene.
