The development objective of the Basic Education Support Project for Sudan is to increase enrollment and retention and improve reading proficiency of boys and girls in early grades of primary education in target disadvantaged schools. Some of the negative impacts and mitigation measures include: (1) re-vegetate the construction site by planting rapidly growing vegetation and plants for increase in soil erosion as a result of the construction; (2) ensure immediate cleanup of the area by removing the contaminated topsoil and disposing properly in a designated place; (3) back fill excavation area as quick as possible or create an embankment to avoid run off; (4) proper disposal of construction waste to avoid water pollution through run off of hazardous construction; (5) spray water to control dust to avoid air pollution; (6) limit the vehicles allowed into the site and use efficient machineries; (7) ensure that efficient equipment is used for noise resulting from construction works; (8) provide alternative route for traffic; and (9) increase the infrastructure in the area to accommodate the population.
