The treaty along with the integration processes in the Western Europe paved way for the onset of the reconciliation chapter in the French-German history which continued throughout the entire Cold War period. [...] The flip side of the Élysée Treaty was to drive a wedge between the USA and the FRG with the aim of consolidating the European power as a third block between the USA and the USSR.2 Nevertheless, de Gaulle was not able to pull it over, as the FRG did not fall into that “trap” due to the realization of the imminent threat of the expansion of communism and inability of France to guarantee the securit. [...] It should be recalled that long ago, the first Secretary General of NATO, Lord Ismay, famously said that the purpose of NATO was to “keep the Americans in, the Russians out, and the Germans down”.63 Now it can be argued that one of the purposes of the “Zeitenwende” is to keep the Americans in, the Russians out, and the French down.
