On January 1, 1987, the total population including Armed Forces overseas approached 243 million, having increased by 2.2 million or 0.9 percent since January 1, 1986 and 15.7 million since the April 1, 1980 census. The number of births per 1,000 population dropped slightly from 15.7 in 1985 to 15.3 in 1986. The 3.7 million births in 1986 were the second highest since 1965. There were 8.7 deaths per 1,000 population in 1986. The average annual rate of growth between April, 1980 and January 1, 1987, was 9.9 per 1,000 population, which was below the annual growth rates per 1,000 population of 10.5 per 1,000 during the 1970s, 12.6 for the 1960s and 17.1 for the 1950s. The population estimates are based on the last resident census count plus the Armed Forces overseas, resident births, and net civilian immigration minus deaths.
