Consultation Paper ALIA Code of Ethics for the Library and Information Services

I think it would be beneficial to have a greater definition of censorship and what application we're referring to here - is this just about censorship of collections, or censorship of staff, too? Recent examples of staff censorship have included the banning of library staff from wearing Indigenous flag badges, LGBTQIA+ badges, and keffiyehs. [...] I also strongly believe that given the widespread and ongoing interest in Palestine, libraries are going to need to include Palestinians in their programs and services, and they are going to need to do this both: 1. [...] I support this with the addition that we also need to be encouraging the members of our own workforce in how to identify and combat mis- and dis- information; there are unfortunately many library staff who also fall for false information. [...] How do we not just engage with First Nations worldviews, but also with them as humans? And how do we develop our field to try to have more First Nations people apply to be part of the field? How do we also combat the LIS staff who are not interested in engaging with this? Q12. [...] I strongly believe that we need to reiterate worker rights within some of these clauses specifically, and we need to do more to make the sector more appealing to (and safer for) people of colour.
