The European Union’s (EU) START facility (Secretariat Technical Assistance to Regions in Transition) under the Initiative for coal regions in transition assists EU regions in taking measures to move away from coal, peat and oil shale energy dependence in a manner that promotes a just transition. This report outlines recommendations for developing a strategic framework to assist the Stara Zagora region in Bulgaria. It focuses on transitioning from its traditional coal-based industry to a more sustainable and diversified economic model including a sustainable and innovative agricultural sector.
