UNDERSTANDING VISA HOPPING: IMPACTS ON AUSTRALIA'S SKILLED IMMIGRATION LANDSCAPE

When comparing graduate visa holders who engage in visa hopping without obtaining permanent residency to other graduate visa holders in the same occupation, the salary difference reduces to about 10%. [...] Looking at the top origin countries of migrants in Australia, we compare the differences in the probability of visa hopping from migrants from different countries.8 The results are presented in Figure 9. [...] We merge in the annual wages received by the migrants in the financial year following the one in which they received their TGV grant. [...] If the highest course level completed by the migrant before the TGV is strictly higher than the highest course level completed after the TGV, the migrant is categorized as having returned for a lower level of education. [...] The trend in the changes over the years in the distribution of migrants across categories has remained consistent with our previous categorization.
