ILC Greengross Lecture 2024: When age meets behaviour – wealth, health and happiness

In contrast, we compiled some data for a cross-party parliamentary group, estimating the years of life lost on average due to major behavioural and lifestyle factors in the UK. [...] In essence, we have the tools and knowledge to make healthier choices the norm rather than the exception. [...] Previously, young people in the UK were criticised for not saving, but the introduction of auto-enrolment flipped the default: instead of opting in to save, you had to opt out. [...] Interestingly, the experience of the pandemic reminded us of the importance of social connections. [...] We estimate that the overall impact of de-shrouding on the economy to be between 0.23-1.03% of GDP.
