Against this backdrop, political parties are positioning themselves for the European elections, in the knowledge that this is just one step on the road to election to the National Council in the autumn, or even in the shorter term in the event of a coalition crisis which includes the Austrian People's Party (ÖVP) and the Greens. [...] For the FPÖ, it's not the freedom of the individual but the community that's at the heart of politics. [...] The FPÖ is well aware of the weakness of the European nationalist and eurosceptic parties in the European Parliament. [...] When asked which parties are favored by the current context, 66% of those questioned cited the FPÖ, 18% the ÖVP and 6% for the Greens, who are paying the price for their participation in the current government.66 In the event of a direct election of the Chancellor, Herbert Kickl also came out on top, with 21% of the vote, against 17% for Nehammer (ÖVP), 14% for Babler (SPÖ), 9% for Meinl-Reisinger.
