Stop the Criminalisation and Repression of Climate and Environmental Protests Around the World

11 Dec 2024

This policy brief addresses the rising criminalisation and repression of climate and environmental protests worldwide, a trend seen across both democratic and non-democratic nations. The report identifies four mechanisms of repression: anti-protest laws, judicial processes, policing by state and non-state actors, and killings or disappearances of activists. Key trends include an increase in anti-protest legislation, misuse of anti-terror and anti-organised crime laws, and significant violence towards activists. Recommendations call for the protection of protest rights, participatory governance in extractive projects, and adherence to human rights frameworks. This study underscores the urgent need for democratic principles and legal safeguards to support activism amid the escalating climate crisis.
