Gender development indicators: district level analysis for the eastern region

2002

The present study examines the status of women in the districts of the five eastern states of Assam, Bihar, Jharkhand, Orissa and West Bengal using selected demographic, educational, socio-cultural, health-related and economic indicators. Relative levels of gender development or backwardness is assessed both for rural and urban locations based on a ranking exercise. The emerging regional patterns throw light on complex dimensions of gender equality/inequality and opens up avenues for formulation of hypotheses for detailed examination as well as policy intervention.
