Knowledge for a warmer world: A patent analysis of climate change adaptation

We analyzed the composition of the scientific and technological knowledge bases of CCATs to show which scientific and technological capabilities are needed to advance, adopt, and utilize CCATs. [...] To the best of our knowledge, this is the first systematic analysis of the current state of technological knowledge for adaptation. [...] The qualitative details of the knowledge base reveal scientific and technological requirements needed to develop, adopt, and utilize these technologies and inform policy makers how to facilitate advancement and transfer of adaptation technologies. [...] To ensure the uniqueness of inventions, we used the patent DOCDB family ID of patents downloaded from PATSTAT (Spring 2021 version) as the unit of analysis (Kang and Tarasconi, 2016; Oce, 2021).3 We supplemented the patents with CPC classifications obtained from the master classification file (April 2021 version) provided by USPTO.4 To identify adaptation and mitigation technologies, we used the C. [...] The first two conditions are related to the patents created by direct financial support of the government and the last three conditions are related to the patents being reliant on prior knowledge created by financial support of the government.
