Background In the lead up to the 27th Conference of the Parties to the UNFCCC (COP27), to be held in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt, from 6-17 November 2022, the Government of Egypt, as the incoming COP27 President, in collaboration with UN-Habitat and with the facilitation of ICLEI, developed the Sustainable Urban Resilience for the Next Generation (SURGe Initiative) – [working title]. [...] The SURGe Initiative is one of four UN led COP27 Presidential Initiatives that aim to accelerate the implementation of the international development agendas including the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Paris Accord. [...] In addition to the members of the Governing Bodies of UN-Habitat, high-level representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Housing, Utilities and Urban Communities of Egypt, the COP27 Presidency, and core partners of the SURGe Initiative including ICLEI, Global Alliance for Buildings and Construction, UNEP, and World Resources Institute will be present at the briefing. [...] Objective of the Briefing The objective of the briefing is to update the members of the Governing Bodies of UN-Habitat on the Organization’s roadmap to COP27. [...] The proposed agenda is as follows: Time Session 10:00 – Welcome & Opening Remarks 10:10 10:10 – Update on the Housing and Urban Ministerial Meeting 10:20 10:20 – Q&A and remarks by Member States and the members of the Governing Bodies 10:35 of UN-Habitat 10:35 – Introduction to the COP27 Presidential Initiative 10:40 10:40 – Presentation on the Sustainable Urban Resilience for the next Generation.
