Introduction The transition from the second to the third millennium has been marked by a shift in development thinking and policy prescription, as the concept of poverty eradication became the guiding mechanism of economic and social policies in the developing world. [...] The objective of this lecture is to review achievements in the world and in SSA in the area of economic development with the aim to answer the question: Why has poverty not been eradicated in Sub-Saharan Africa after two decades of successive poverty reduction strategies? The rest of the paper is organized as follows.
