The popularly available estimates for the music industry, primarily focused on the formal sector, are miniscule in comparison and reflect just the tip of the industry iceberg. [...] The numbers estimated through this study emphasise the magnitude of the music industry, both in terms of income and the number of people engaged in it, hitherto unknown or unacknowledged. [...] The report highlights the scale of the informal industry in India and the opportunities and vulnerabilities in the wake of digitisation and external shocks such as the Covid-19 pandemic. [...] As demonstrated in the sections above, the income for most categories of artists and performance are very low, in addition to the problems of seasonality and unreliable sources of income. [...] This report started with a discussion on the undervaluation of the industry’s potential due to the non-payment of royalty and for the consumption of music generally.
