24 Mar 2008

We are also aware that the information in the study reflects the technological state of the art in the first half of 1991. [...] Its aims are to improve services in libraries in the interest of the users and to optimize the use of library resources in Europe, with appropriate and cost effective use of new information technologies. [...] The intervening time has been used for an exploratory programme of work to gain information on the current status of libraries in Europe, the extent of automation and the problems libraries face, leading up to the definition of the libraries' action. [...] The findings of the study are available to inform the Commission as to possible areas of relevant action that might take place under the four Action Lines of the libraries' programme. [...] The analysis of library needs was used as well as the typology to define and develop five outline scenarios which are documented in Section 7. The relationship between each of the technologies and library needs are further explored through practical examples in each of the scenarios.
