THE “NAHDA”, A PERIOD OF MODERNISATION The Nahda refers to a modernisation movement that the Muslim world, and specifically the Arab and Maghreb countries, experienced between the beginning of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century. [...] THE IMPACT OF ISLAM ON THE POLITICAL EVOLUTION OF THE THREE MAGHREB COUNTRIES In the three Maghreb countries, the first impact of Islam in the political field was the inclusion of the reference to Islam as the state religion in their first constitutional texts. [...] The problem arises more when the principles of the constitution and the rules of Islam are in conflict, as is the case with the constitutions of the three Maghreb countries. [...] Gradually, the influence of religion on the political and legal evolution of these countries led to a reversal of the achievements of the Nahda and the efforts of the modernists. [...] The political and geopolitical factors of the twentieth century, such as colonisation, the creation of the State of Israel in 1948 and the military defeat of the Arab countries in 1967, were not the causes of the Nahda's failure.
