Survey participants were asked questions about their views on importance of the rule of law, the strength of the rule of law in the UK, the extent to which they thought people in other countries saw the rule of law as an important part of British life and in particular what they might feel if those from other parts of the world no longer saw the UK as a country that adheres to the rule of law. [...] • Fealty to the principle of the rule of law and the existence of three well developed systems of law within the UK has been and remains to the mutual economic advantage of the constituent nations of the UK. [...] More recent survey data from the Law Society further reinforces the importance of the rule of law to the people of all of the nations of the UK. [...] 22 IDENTITY AND INFLUENCE The rule of law as a source of “mutual economic advantage” for the UK The rule of law’s contribution to “mutual economic advantage” The evidence from Figure 7 also indicates that the bulk of British people recognise the importance of the rule of law to the UK’s prosperity (”mutual economic advantage”). [...] Consistency in the public’s view of the broad outline of the meaning of the rule of law The discussion at the expert roundtable suggested there might be sufficient basis for developing a “thin” UK-wide understanding of the rule of law.
