[...] However, as with other provisions on social and economic rights, this falls within the Constitution’s “directive principles” and is not guaranteed as a human right. [...] As a result, thousands of people in informal settlements across the country remain at risk of forced eviction, which is not prohibited under Nigerian law. [...] Nigeria is a state party to the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights and other international and regional human rights treaties which require states to realize the right to adequate housing, and to prevent and refrain from carrying out forced evictions.
