[...] As discussed in the previous section, enabling women and couples to decide the number, timing, and spacing of births plays a critical role in reducing maternal mortality and morbidity, infant and child mortality, unsafe abortion, and HIV transmission. [...] And while the $2.6 billion the administration has allocated to gender equity and equality is not new money, but rather a doubling of gender-focused attributions within existing earmarks, it does provide new opportunities to elevate the importance of family planning and reproductive health to women’s social and economic wellbeing and development progress overall.
