Safe Routes to School Programs ( ) Safe Routes to School (SRTS) is an international movement to make walking and bicycling to school safe, convenient and fun in order to improve student’s health and learning readiness, unite neighborhoods, and reduce traffic problems and pollution. [...] Figure 1 Walking and Bicycling to School by SRTS Program Duration (SRTS 2015) A study of 801 schools in the District of Columbia, Florida, Oregon, and Texas found that SRTS increased the proportion of students walking and biking to school, and that these effects built over time. [...] They typically include a combination of active and public transport improvements, roadway and parking design changes, efficient road and parking pricing, development policy reforms, regulatory reforms, improved data collection and program evaluation, and targetted mobility management programs to improve both personal and freight transport efficiency. [...] It is reducing city center parking supply, traffic speeds, and vehicle traffic in order to provide more space for pedestrians, bus and bike-lanes, and trees, and reduce noise and air pollution.
