Does Policy Advocacy Generate Good PR? Evidence From Labor Unions and Minimum Wages

This paper finds minimum wage policy changes and news coverage predict increases in news coverage connecting organized labor and minimum wages, leads coverage of organized labor to shift towards articles about minimum wages. These findings suggest organized labor groups advocate for minimum wage increases in order to generate good PR, and may explain why interest groups advocate for policies that may not directly benefit their constituents.
