The Davis Downside Dossier: The first 1000 downsides of Brexit

2 May 2023

In October 2016, four months after the UK's referendum on leaving the EU, David Davis, then Secretary of State for Exiting the EU, said "There will be no downside to Brexit, only a considerable upside." In 2021, after the UK had left the EU, Yorkshire Bylines began cataloguing the downsides, with the first entries dating from late 2020. In early 2023, the famous dossier added its 1,000th entry. To mark the occasion, Yorkshire Bylines has converted it into spreadsheet format with some simple but quite arbitrary filtering. So, for example, if your interest is in financial services you can see the downsides grouped in that category and then further refined to show the impact on banking, insurance, the stock market or The City. A word of caution. The dossier is not, and has never pretended to be, a reference work on Brexit. We have simply culled items that have appeared in the news that seemed to us to be downsides.
