The Benefits and Costs of International Higher Education Students to the UK Economy

16 May 2023

This is the third iteration of this important research looking at the economic benefits to the UK of hosting so many international students in higher education. The research shows the economic benefits – less any costs – of international students and family members living and studying in the UK. It analyses the direct, indirect, and induced benefits to create a comprehensive picture of the economic impact. Unlike other available assessments, this report breaks the data down for all 650 parliamentary constituencies throughout the UK. International students in the top 10 constituencies together contribute over £2.6 billion to the UK – and that does not include the additional contributions made by those who stay in the UK to work after completing their studies. This report is designed to update and strengthen the existing evidence base on the current economic impact while acknowledging that the contribution of international students goes far beyond this.
