The UN Guiding Principles on Extreme Poverty and Human Rights are a set of principles developed by the United Nations to address the significant and persistent violation of human rights that occurs as a result of extreme poverty. [...] They provide specific guidance on how to address the relationship between poverty and human rights and highlight the importance of a holistic and integrated approach to human rights, including in relation to designing and implementing poverty reduction and eradication policies at the national and international levels. [...] A human rights approach provides a framework for the long-term eradication of extreme poverty based on the recognition of persons living in extreme poverty as rights holders and agents of change A human rights approach respects the dignity and autonomy of persons living in poverty and empowers them to meaningfully and effectively participate in public life, including in the design of public policy. [...] The Guiding Principles are intended as a tool for designing and implementing poverty reduction and eradication policies, and as a guide to how to respect, protect and fulfil the rights of persons living in extreme poverty in all areas of public policy.
