Glasgow communities of colour failed by employability services and workplace racism

The population of people of colour is the highest of any city in Scotland, and the city should, in theory, be providing best-in-class programmes and interventions that are fit for purpose for communities of colour. [...] Whilst it was able to identify some success in the delivery of these commitments (for example, increasing the diversity of the workforce within the public sector and specifically within Scottish Government), where progress was most lacking was in income levels, access to financial support services and tackling the disproportionate number of people of colour in poverty in Scotland. [...] Racism at work: a lack of trust and a lack of action This chapter explores the experience of racism in the workplace, led by the insight and research from our community researchers and the survey they designed and led. [...] Whilst it is the purpose of these programmes to support individuals to access paid work or, at the very least, relevant training to enable access to the labour market, the quality of their experience in the labour market should be central to the way in which the impact of these programmes is evaluated. [...] The fifth stage of this model states the need for: ‘On and Off the Job Support – The client is supported to learn the job and sustain employment, this could include job coaching at work, training, support from a workplace mentor and regular workplace reviews.’ In 2022 a review of supported employment provision was commissioned by the Scottish Government, and reported that the local FSS programmes.
