Berggruen Governance Index

part of Berggruen Institute

The Berggruen Governance Index (BGI) was established in 2017 as a collaborative project between the Berggruen Institute and the UCLA Luskin School of Public Affairs. The primary aim of BGI is to provide a comprehensive evaluation of governance quality across 135 countries over a 20-year period. The index analyzes the relationship between democratic accountability, state capacity, and the provision of public goods, seeking to understand why some countries manage better and enjoy a higher quality of life than others. By combining these three dimensions, BGI offers insights into how governance can be improved to create a more resilient future for societies worldwide. The project includes contributions from renowned scholars and experts and is designed to challenge conventional wisdom about the roles of democracy and governance.
