The International Institute for Population Sciences (IIPS) was established in 1956 under the joint sponsorship of Sir Dorabji Tata Trust, the Government of India, and the United Nations. Originally known as the Demographic Training and Research Centre (DTRC), it was renamed in 1985 to reflect its expanded role in population studies. IIPS serves as a regional center for training and research in population studies for the ESCAP region. The institute plays a pivotal role in population research, providing valuable data and insights into demographic trends, health, and nutrition in India and the broader region. IIPS is known for conducting large-scale surveys such as the National Family Health Survey (NFHS). The institute offers postgraduate, doctoral, and post-doctoral programs and has trained professionals from over 40 countries. IIPS collaborates with various international organizations and provides consultancy services to government and non-government entities.
