Practical Action

Practical Action

Practical Action is an international development organisation putting ingenious ideas to work so people in poverty can change their world. Practical Action helps people find solutions to some of the world’s toughest problems – made worse by catastrophic climate change and persistent gender inequality. We work with communities to develop lasting and locally-owned solutions for agriculture, water and waste management, climate resilience and clean energy. Practical Action was founded as Intermediate Technology Development Group (ITDG) by E.F. ‘Fritz’ Schumacher, a visionary who challenged the aid policies of the 1960s and author of 'Small is Beautiful'. He argued against the transfer of modern, capital-intensive and large-scale technologies to developing countries that did not have the financial resources, technical skills or mass markets to accommodate them. Instead he proposed a shift in emphasis towards ‘intermediate technologies’ based on the needs and skills of people in developing countries.
