During 2022, ISIS-Core was responsible for 535 incidents and 1,329 fatalities — a decrease of 17 percent in the number of incidents and 7 percent increase in the number of fatalities from 2021. [...] In 2022 the victims in 39 percent of JNIM incidents were the national militaries of Burkina Faso and Mali and their surrogates. [...] The data show that 67.6 percent of unknown perpetrators in 2022 were “religious- jihadist,” and 33.2 percent were “ethnonationalist-separatist.” In any given year, upward of 30 percent of the incidents included in the database used to create the Annex of Statistical Information will have an “unknown” perpetrator. [...] The continued expansion of terrorism in Africa — especially in the Sahel and the Democratic Republic of the Congo — resulted in a dramatic increase in the number of incidents and fatalities in these countries and regions. [...] Democratic Republic of the Congo In 2022 there were 984 incidents in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), with 3,458 fatalities (13 percent of the global total of fatalities).
