Individual migration experiences vary in many different aspects including: • the possibility to access a regular migration option for all or part of the journey • the financial resources available to the person on the move and its support network and, therefore, the need to stop during the journey to work and earn money • the means of transportation used and the duration of the journey • the route. [...] A part of the journey overlooked by many Transit migration in migration research Most research on international migration and displacement has focused on the impact of migration on countries of destination (including access to international protection, regularization and local integration of migrants, social cohesion, employment) and countries of origin (exploring, for instance, the impact of remi. [...] Existing research often concentrated on the one hand, on the concept of transit migration and its use in migration policy rather than reality on the ground; or, on the other hand, on protection risks and economic hardship for those in transit, rather than looking at the perspective of the local community and local authorities in transit localities. [...] As mentioned above, providing goods and services to migrants in transit constituted one of the main sources of income for the local population in the city until the government of Niger adopted the Law Against Illicit Smuggling of Migrants following political pressure and economic incentives from the European Union (EU). [...] The country has acknowledged the challenges it faces regarding the collection and analysis of such data both in its 2022 voluntary report on the implementation of the GCM, and it 2022 statistics yearbook, and recently created a technical working group on migration data to work on the issue.
