Initially conceived as an informal forum for coordination among the Ministers of Economy and Finance and the leaders of Central Banks of the 19 major world economies, in addition to the European Union and the newly included African Union, it was promoted to a Summit in 2008, in the aftermath of the severe global economic crisis.
