“All our seafood is either caught or farmed in ways that consider the long-term vitality of harvested species and the well-being of the oceans, as well as the livelihoods of fisheries-dependent communities.” 2. [...] As explained in our previous letter, one- fifth of the world’s marine fish catch is taken out of the ocean to feed farmed animals in the form of fish meal and fish oil (FMFO). [...] Where TRG “consider[s] the long-term vitality of harvested species and the well-being of the oceans, as well as the livelihoods of fisheries-dependent communities”, sourcing of farmed salmon is actively undermining that ambition. [...] The investigative report details numerous cases studies from three of the most widely recognised farmed salmon certification schemes in Scotland - Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC), RSPCA Assured and Soil Association’s Organic standards - to demonstrate the systemic failures of these schemes to improve the environmental, animal welfare and sustainability performance of the Scottish open-net sa. [...] Simply put: the suffering of aquatic animals, worsening food insecurity in the Global South, and the continuing destruction of marine environments are all inseparable from the current industry model for farmed salmon production.
