Diversification in Punjab’s Agriculture: A District Level Approach - Dr. Sobia Rose

Khushab in the year 2011-12 and 2014-15 was in the category of highly diversified districts while in the year 2018-19 it moved to the lower level of diversification based on the crops included in analysis. [...] District Jhelum in 2011-12 was in the highly diversified districts while in 2014-15 it moved to the lower category of crop diversification and in the year 2018-19 there was improvement and it again found in the category of district with high crop diversification. [...] Multan in 2011-12 was in the category of moderately diversified districts while it moved to low level of diversification in 2014-15 and remained at the same position in the year 2018-19 based on the crops used to analyzed the area coverage. [...] Similarly, higher education, reduced distance from the road, and security in the ownership of land positively and significantly influence the shares of vegetables and commercial crops in the total cropped Diversity index in area. [...] Despite increase in the share of vegetables and fruits, however, the improvement was not enough to compensate the deterioration in the share of minor crops and pulses, thus the concentration of cereals increased.
