In contrast to this high donation limit, the five charts set out below show that the estimated median donation to the five main federal Canadian political parties during the five years from 2016 to 2020 inclusive was $75.03 and during the seven years from 2016 to 2022 inclusive (including two election years, and including the People’s Party of Canada in the calculations for 2021-2022) it was $77.0. [...] The number of parties used to calculate the averages increased in 2021 and 2022 to include the PPC after the party won the fifth highest share of votes in the 2021 election, ahead of the Green Party. [...] Based on the estimated median contribution through this seven-year period, the current annual donation limit (in 2024) of $1,725 to each party plus $1,725 to the riding associations of each party (i.e. [...] The Canada Elections Act should be changed to require the parties to disclose this information quarterly in the same way that they are required to disclose their donors and donations every quarter, so that the public and the media can track changes in the level of support for each party as indicated by their total membership. [...] As shown by the statistics in Charts 1 and 2 below, based on the latest membership totals for the six main federal parties that the parties themselves have disclosed from 2014 (Bloc), 2017 (NDP), 2021 (PPC) on through 2022 (Conservatives, Greens and Liberals), the total estimated number of Canadians who belong to these six main parties is 1,074,620.
