Artificial Intelligence and Green Energy in Africa

Where the research has extended to Africa and the green energy sector in particular, it has largely only explored the potential of AI in the production of selected utilities, including Smart Grids, and cross-border energy trading platforms, to mention a few (Strusani and Houngbonon, 2019; Jha et al., 2017). [...] This includes highlighting the benefits of AI as well as potential systemic risks it may pose to the advancement of fair and just, sustainable generation and supply of green energy on the continent. [...] How can AI be governed to ensure a more fair, equitable, and just deployment of AI? What are the institutional arrangements, business models, and capabilities that will be necessary to achieve the most cost-effective, sustainable, and welfare-enhancing outcomes at the nexus of AI and green energy provision in Africa? 4. [...] This includes conducting a desktop study of the literature as influenced by the background of the research; and qualitative research where the team will interview energy experts in the AI industry in Africa (e.g. [...] More specifically, the methodology will follow the following phases; ● Phase I: The first phase will involve a desk study of relevant literature on AI deployment in the energy sector on the African continent to map the interventions, regulatory and governance environment, and understand the opportunities that AI presents, risks and challenges and how it can contribute to mitigating climate change.
