RSE - tree planting inquiry evidence - Luke Gaskell 2024

Thus, within the context of this Inquiry and subsequent report, we will use Commercial Forestry to cover tree planting that is wholly or in part intended for harvesting (some refer to this as productive forestry), and Woodland to cover tree planting that is intended to remain as such for the long term. [...] [500 words] Response: We seek to establish the extent to which current practices are delivering these benefits, how far they represent good public value in the short and long term, and what more, if anything, could be done to improve public benefits in tackling the climate-nature crisis and the economic and social well-being of resident communities by tree planting, woodland and commercial forest. [...] Two examples of upland marginal land that have recently been afforested are Nether Horsburgh farm NT3040 in the Tweed valley below Peebles and the slopes above and to the west of the upper Tweed at Crook Hill and Quilt Hill NT 1026. [...] Across the valley the heathland along the ridge at Glenmuck Height and Weird Law NT0724, which has been left open above the forest, is soon likely to be taken over by self-sown Sitka spruce. [...] We believe that the owners and managers of forests should be encouraged or even compelled to maintain in good condition the parts of their land which they agreed to leave unplanted when applying for grant aid.
